Autonomous forklifts

Self-driving forklifts that read the site and plan their own routes.

Commercial

Sold and running daily at many sites, with reference customers you can call.

What it does

An autonomous forklift maps the site with lidar or cameras, plans its own route and moves pallets without a driver. It uses AI perception to read its surroundings, so it does not depend on reflectors, magnetic tape or floor codes.

Our listing rule

We list a forklift only if it drives without reflectors, magnetic tape or floor codes, and uses AI perception to read the site. Guided AGV forklifts are a commodity, so we leave them out.

Best for

  • Repetitive pallet moves between dock, storage and production
  • Night shifts and sites short of forklift drivers
  • Standard pallets on predictable routes

Watch out for

  • Many forklifts sold as autonomous still follow reflectors or tape. Ask how it navigates.
  • Slower than a skilled driver. VisionNav lists 5.4 km/h top speed.
  • Mixed traffic with people and manual trucks needs a clear safety plan.

What it costs

A 2024 price guide puts forklift AGVs at about US$75,000 to US$200,000 each. Chinese vendors quote per project.

Why we rate it commercial

VisionNav passes our test. Its trucks navigate without markers and use AI and deep learning for perception. It reports more than 5,000 units in use and 750+ projects.

Who makes it in China

Ask every vendor

  • How does it navigate, and what happens when a pallet sits off its marked spot?
  • How many pallets per hour per truck at a reference site?
  • How does the truck handle damaged pallets and people in the aisle?
